When Bernadette Wimberley arrived in 1984, Goldey-Beacom did not have a true athletic department.  Her leadership and determination changed that with the creation of the department that had two NAIA sports to the one that sponsored 11 NCAA teams and had six full-time employees upon her 2016 retirement.  Always gregarious and always one who supported the student-athletes, Wimberley led with authority, care, compassion and resourcefulness.  This foundation that she spearheaded paved the way for the national experience and exposure the department would have on multiple occasions.
