PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team was dealt a 3-0 loss by the University of the District of Columbia in non-league play at the Joseph West Jones Center on Sat. afternoon.
GBC has now lost its last three matches as the Lightning fall to 3-4 on the season. The Firebirds (7-4) avenged a 3-0 loss at home to the Lightning last year by winning 25-10, 25-9, 25-18.
Sophomore middle-hitter Catherine Howard and sophomore outside hitter Renee DeLeo led the team with four kills apiece, while junior Roni Shaner again played setter for the injured Monica Dempsey and collected nine assists and six digs.
Senior captain A.J. Hicks led the team defensively with seven digs and graduate senior Lauren Witzke had six digs to go with a team-high two service aces.
Leading the Firebirds offensively were Karen Trevino (nine kills, five service aces, two blocks), Grace DeMichelis (nine kills, seven assists, three service aces, three blocks) and Vanessa Garley (seven kills, two service aces, three blocks). Trevino and Garley both hit .400 for the day, and UDC hit .329 as a team.
Meanwhile, the Lightning struggled offensively as they hit 13 kills to go with 13 errors (.000 hitting percentage) and had eight ball-handling errors on the day.
In the first set, GBC had an early 8-6 lead before the Firebirds used a 19-2 run to close out the match. DeMichelis had three kills as she also split setting duties with Joi Upton. UDC had 11 kills and just two errors on 17 attack attempts for an astounding .529 hitting percentage.
DeMichelis dominated play in the second set as well as she tallied five kills to go with just one error. The Firebirds jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-9 win and took a 2-0 match lead.
The Lightning showed heart down 2-0 in the third set, but UDC would take over after a 15-15 tie and close out the match on a 10-3 run. The match featured six ties, with Goldey-Beacom leading three different times and twice by as many as four (6-2 and 12-8).
Howard led the Lightning with three kills in the third set, but Trevino took the game over for UDC with five kills while Garley and Mirella Nunes each tallied three kills to help the Firebirds close out the match with a 25-18 win.
The Lightning will look to end their three-game losing skid and earn their first conference win of the season when they go on the road to take on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe USP on Tues. night, 7 p.m.
