Volleyball Dealt Tough 3-2 Loss By Wilmington

In a match with a home quarterfinal date on the line that could have gone either way, Goldey-Beacom fell on the wrong end of a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss (19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 14-16) to Wilmington (DE) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The loss drops Goldey-Beacom into third place in the CACC South Division, which means the team will visit Bridgeport in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament next Tuesday at 6:00 pm.  The quarterfinals winners will partake in Championship Weekend next Saturday and Sunday at Goldey-Beacom College.

Goldey-Beacom in the fifth set went on a 6-2 run that turned a 9-7 deficit into a 13-11 lead and sent the crowd roaring.  Junior Giuliana Jaku (Belluno, Italy) and freshman Kelci Gingras (Orem, UT) each had a kill.

The Lightning held a 14-12 edge with two match points, but dropped the next four points.  GBC committed three straight attacks errors with a block by Wilmington's Makailah Ford at 14-13 and one from Addison Hoover at 15-14 before Eliza Schneider got a kill for the winner.

Jaku continued to haunt the Wildcats.  One year after getting 26 kills against Wilmington in the regular-season finale, Jaku could not have done much more on her Senior Day with 21 to go with seven digs.

Sophomore Juliana Malena (Miami, FL) had a career-best 55 assists to go with 17 digs for her 16th double-double of the season.  Sophomore Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) recorded 33 digs, Gingras notched 13 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the campaign, freshman Gabi Fullwood (Powder Springs, GA) had 13 kills with junior Kloe Waymel (Mulhouse, France) adding 10.

Karla Nunez-Rivera pounded 19 kills, Christine Covello had 27 assists with Schneider and Chelsea Blaine-Agett recording 13 kills apiece for the Wildcats.

Wilmington is the top seed from the South and will host Dominican (NY) in the quarterfinals.
