WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Rebecca Stoffer and sophomore Catherine Howard were superb in the middle for the Lightning with eight and five kills, respectively, but the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 sweep at the University of the District of Columbia in non-league play Thurs. night.
UDC won in straight sets by the following scores: 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17.
The Firebirds (15-4) completed the season sweep of GBC having defeated the Lightning at the Jones Center, 3-0 back on Sept. 18. The Lightning, coming off a 3-0 win at Lincoln on Tues. night, fell to 4-11 overall with the loss.
Both middle hitters, Stoffer and Howard hit the ball extremely well for Goldey-Beacom. Stoffer, who for the better part of the season has been in the top-10 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference for hitting percentage, tied her season-high of eight kills and had no errors on 13 attack attempts (.615 hitting percentage). Howard also had a big night with five kills and zero errors on 10 attack attempts (.500 hitting percentage).
Junior Roni Shaner had a solid all-around night as well, registering five kills, three assists and six digs, and sophomore setter Monica Dempsey directed the offense on the night with 13 assists.
The Firebirds, who used just six players the whole match, were led by two hitters in double-figures in Mirella Nunes (16k 2e 24ta .583) and Grace Perilli (10k 6e 30 ta). Setter Grace DeMichelis directed the offense with 31 assists.
Next up for GBC is a tri-match at CACC foe Bloomfield College on Sat. afternoon. First, the Lightning will take on the host Deacons at 12 p.m. and then they play Mercy for a second time this year at 2 p.m.
