Women's Soccer Looks to Rebound Against Concordia

Lightning Hoping to Earn Second Win in Busy Week

Alexa Boyer and the Lightning will host Concordia on Saturday afternoon.

WILMINGTON, Del.
- Completing a hectic schedule of three matches in five days, the Lightning women's soccer team will return to the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match against Concordia.

The game, which is slated for a 1 p.m. kick-off, will open a soccer doubleheader at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex. The Lightning men's team, which is in the middle of a three-match homestand, will face the Clippers in the second game at approximately 3 p.m.

The Lightning will be looking to rebound after suffering a 2-0 loss on Thursday night at Delaware State, which dropped their record to 1-8-0 on the season. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano (Shore Regional H.S./Ocean, N.J.) made eight saves, including five in the second half, as the Lightning were outshot by an 18-5 margin.

The loss also snapped a streak of four straight games with a goal for the Lightning, who scored a season-high three goals against Washington Adventist on Tuesday to earn their first win of the season.

Junior forward Danielle Semenza (Hazleton Area H.S./Hazle Township, Pa.) is the Lightning's leading scorer with three goals while freshman forward Tiffany Kelly (Parsippany H.S./Parsippany, N.J.) has contributed two goals with an assist. Meanwhile, Vetrano is tied for fourth in the CACC with 51 saves while her .718 save percentage is tied for seventh in the conference.

After dropping a 1-0 decision against Queens in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon, the Clippers will bring an 0-8-0 overall record and an 0-5-0 mark in the CACC into Saturday's affair with the Lightning. The Clippers have struggled offensively this season, posting just four goals in the eight matches.

Freshman goalkeeper Johana Vargas (High School for Arts and Business/Queens, N.Y.) led the Clippers in the loss by posting four saves. She leads the CACC with 67 saves in 8 matches, an 8.38 average. Meanwhile, she has stopped 65.0 per cent of the shots she has faced.

Four different players have scored a goal this season for the Clippers, who have been outscored by a 36-4 margin.

Led by sophomore Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.), the Lightning struck for six goals in last year's 6-1 victory over the Clippers at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field. Smith, who led the Lightning with 15 goals last year, scored three times in a 12-minute span during the first half to ignite the Lightning's offensive outburst.

Goldey-Beacom outshot the Clippers by a 19-11 margin and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

After the match against Concordia on Saturday, the Lightning will visit Lincoln (Pa.) on Wednesday night in a non-conference affair at 5 p.m.
