PIKE CREEK, Del. - Despite a 20-7 shot advantage, the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team was shut out for a second consecutive game, en-route to a 1-0 overtime loss to Post on Homecoming Saturday at Nancy Churcman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning slipped to 4-5 on the season overall and 3-4 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with the loss, while Post improved to 5-5 overall and also 3-4 in league play.
The nation's leading goal scorer
Alexandra Smith fired a game-high 10 shots for GBC (two on goal), but Post goalkeeper Grace McConnell was up to the task, making five saves to preserve the shutout. Senior
Kristin Degenhardt made four saves for the Lightning in a losing effort. Redshirt-sophomore
Danielle Semenza and senior
Marissa Valladares each took three shots for the Lightning.
The Eagles scored just 1:21 into the extra session as Renel Dennis capitalized on a crucial mistake by a Lightning defender by sending a thru ball to Elin Nyman, who shot past Degenhardt for the winning goal.
GBC is now 0-2 in overtime games this season and 0-4-2 in its last six overtime appearances dating back to 2007.
The Lightning will look to bounce back on Tues., Oct. 11 as they visit crosstown rival Wilmington University for a CACC showdown at Kirkwood Soccer Complex. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
