PIKE CREEK, Del. – Mansfield's Erika Moyer scored a goal in each half to propel the Mounties to a 2-0 victory over the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team in both teams' season opener Sat. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.

The Lightning (0-1) have now lost their last six season openers, including the last three consecutive years to Mansfield. The Mounties improved to 1-0 with the victory.

Junior Kristin Degenhardt (0-1) got the start in the Lightning net and made two saves and allowed one goal. Sophomore Alyssa Vetrano came in for the second half and made seven stops while allowing one goal. Mansfield's Alexis Wilhelm played the full 90 minutes in net and made five saves to preserve the shutout victory.

GBC played a very competitive first half, outshooting the Mounties, 6-5 and taking three corner kicks to Mansfield's two. The Lightning looked to strike early, taking the first two shots of the game, but came up empty in the first half.

Mansfield had been outshot 4-2 in the game when Moyer opened the scoring in the 18th minute of action. She beat Degenhardt to a cross by Jackie Karlovich and put the ball in the open net to give the Mounties an early 1-0 lead.

Neither team could generate much offense after Moyer's first goal, and so Mansfield took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The Mounties took the game over in the second half, outshooting GBC 21-3 after the break. Eventually Moyer added an insurance goal in the 82rd minute to give her team a 2-0 cushion.

The Lightning, led by junior Marissa Valladares' four shots (two on goal), could not mount a comeback, and they fell by a final tally of 2-0.

GBC will go on the road Wed. to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y. at 3:30 p.m. Junior Karin Eriksson scored three goals against the Spartans last year, but the Lightning fell at home, 4-3. Eriksson and the Lightning will look to avenge that loss when they meet again next week.
