Women’s Soccer Drops Regular-Season Finale, 3-1, to Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom looked for one final result heading into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, but was dealt a 3-1 loss by Wilmington (DE) at Abessinio Stadium in Wilmington.

Goldey-Beacom (6-8-3, 4-5-2 CACC) will be the sixth seed for the CACC Tournament and on Saturday will play at No. 3 seed Chestnut Hill, beginning at 5:00 pm in Plymouth Whitemarsh, PA.  Wilmington (9-2-6, 5-1-1) will be the fourth seed and host No. 5 seed Georgian Court at a time to be announced.

It will be the ninth time in the last 11 competitive seasons GBC is headed to the CACC Tournament.

The usual tussle between the two rivals who for most part are annual participants in the CACC Tournament saw plenty of defense in the game's first 30 minutes with occasional play inside the 18.

Wilmington in the 31st minute scored on its chance inside the box.  Sierra Bartley had her initial shot saved by two-time CACC Goalkeeper of the Week Malaika Nunziata (Cape Town, South Africa), but Indigo Kirk pounced on the rebound and put it in the back of the net.

Goldey-Beacom at the start of the second half put on the pressure and that was rewarded in the 68th minute for a 1-1 draw.  Tess Pearce (Manchester, England), picked Monday to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, played a perfect corner kick from the right side and fellow sophomore Jessica Jensen (Las Vegas, NV) headed it home for her fifth goal of the season.

The scales only were balanced for four minutes before the Wildcats made several outstanding individual plays for a 2-1 lead.  That was capped when Stef Barrios fired one from the top of the 18 inside the right post.

Bartley in the 77th minute gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead, putting one home of an assist from Evelyn Payne.

Nunziata made five saves for the Lightning.
