PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team again played well in spurts, but were overcome 3-0 by the top team in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division, Philadelphia University, on Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
Philadelphia won the first set 25-13, snuck by GBC 25-21 in the second set and then finished off the match with a 25-10 third set victory. The Lightning fell to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in league play while the Rams improved to 7-3 and 5-0 in the CACC.
Philadelphia, who currently sits atop the once unbeatable Georgian Court for first place in the CACC South Division after becoming the second CACC team to take down the Lions in league play, out-hit GBC .291 (32k 9e 79 ta) to -.02 (19 k 21e 87 ta) for the night.
Goldey-Beacom was led by junior Rebecca Stoffer with six kills to just two errors (.267 hitting percentage). Stoffer came into the match ranked sixth in the league in hitting percentage. She also added one ace and a solo block.
Sophomore setter Monica Dempsey directed the offense with 11 assists with junior outside hitter Roni Shaner pitching in with four assists. Dempsey and Shaner also had six and nine digs, respectively.
Senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks led the team defensively with 11 digs. She also added one kill on the night. Hicks is just seven digs shy of the 800 mark for her career, as she leads the team with 114 digs this season.
The Rams had nine players record at least one kill with Leanna Lilge leading the way with nine kills for the night and a .429 hitting percentage. Julie Niblock, Jordan Milligan and Rebekah Waybrant each had four kills. Heather Martin had team-highs of eight assists and six digs.
The Lightning are back in action on Thurs. night as they visit the four-year reigning CACC champion, Georgian Court at 7 p.m. The Lions, heading into tonight's match at Wilmington, are just 2-3 in conference play this year. Their CACC regular season win-streak came to an end at 74 games when they lost 3-0 at Holy Family on Sept. 18. The Lions were just three wins short of tying the NCAA Division II record of 77 set by West Texas A&M of the Lone Star Conference.
