PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team trailed just 2-1 at intermission but surrendered three consecutive Griffin goals in the second half in a span of less than eight minutes and ultimately lost 5-2 to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Chestnut Hill on Wed. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning fell to 0-5-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in conference play while Chestnut Hill improved to 5-1-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Junior Karin Eriksson scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute to bring GBC within a goal, down 2-1. The goal was the 19th of her career as she surpassed Kristin Johnston for sole possession of third place on the school's career goals list.
Down 5-1, the Lightning showed no quit as freshman Tess Beukers tallied the first goal of her career on an assist by Marissa Valladares just before the 81 minute mark to give the game its final score of 5-2.
The Griffins, who outshot GBC 27-6 for the game, had five different players score goals as they stayed unbeaten in CACC play.
Chestnut Hill's Alyssa Radetich opened the scoring on the day a little over 10 minutes in when Steph Litty's direct kick sailed over the Lightning's defense and found Radetich's feet and she booted a shot past GBC goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano.
Maggie Faselt added a second CHC goal nearly 10 minutes later when she gathered a loose ball inside the box and struck for an unassisted goal to put her team ahead, 2-0.
Eriksson's penalty kick goal would bring the Lightning within a goal as the halftime horn sounded despite their being out-shot 14-2 in that first stanza and taking zero corner kicks to CHC's five.
The Griffin offensive onslaught did not cease in the second half as Chestnut Hill outshot GBC 13-4 and consequently outscored the Lightning 3-1 in that final 45 minutes.
All three goals came in a span of less than eight minutes. First, Amanda Botbyl scored an unassisted goal off a rebound at the 67:58 mark, then Litty scored on a penalty kick at 73:20, and finally, Marykate McShane added a goal off a Boybyl assist at 75:47.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano (0-4-1) made 11 saves in 90 minutes of work and allowed five goals. Chestnut Hill's Jessica Veazey, one of four Delaware natives on the Griffin roster, earned the victory in goal with one save and one goal allowed. Caitlin Lafferty, another Delaware product, came on for the final 10 minutes and made one save and also allowed one goal.
