NYACK, N.Y. – Despite one of its best efforts of the season, the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team surrendered the only goal of the game with under three minutes left in regulation and lost a heartbreaker, 1-0 at Nyack on Sat. afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

As they had tried to do all day long, the Warriors sent a deep ball down the field and let the speedy Alisha Smith run under it, and Smith was finally able to get behind the Lightning defense and send a shot past junior goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt for the game-winning goal at the 87:19 mark.

“This had to be our most complete effort of the season,” head coach John Cappiello said of his 0-8-1 squad. “We had two or three dynamic opportunities to score, but it was them who snuck one in. The backline and Degenhardt played a great game. [Junior] Felicia Justice and [freshman] Kaitlin Doherty had career-type days, and Degenhardt played probably her best game here at Goldey-Beacom.”

The Lightning controlled the game for the majority of the 90 minutes and did a better job of creating goal-scoring opportunities despite Nyack's slight, 15-12 edge in shots. Sophomore Kelly Williams (3 shots, 2 shots on goal), playing in her home state of New York, gave herself two excellent chances to score but was just unable to finish on either one.

Junior midfielder Marissa Valladares was also very active on the offensive end, taking a team-high five shots and putting three on net.

Degenhardt, who saw her first action of the season since suffering an injury the second game of the season on Sept. 8 against St. Thomas Aquinas, made five saves and allowed just one goal. Nyack's Shannon McNeeley made seven saves to earn the complete game shutout victory.

GBC fell to 0-6-1 in CACC play while Nyack improved to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in league play. The Lightning will host CACC foe Holy Family at 3:30 p.m. on Tues. afternoon.
