PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team ended its 2010 season on a high-note Fri. afternoon as the Lightning sent its lone graduating senior, Ashley Welch off with an 8-0 non-conference victory over Lincoln at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
Welch, a two-year player at Goldey-Beacom College after transferring from New Jersey City University, had two assists and 33 shots in her Lightning career. Unfortunately, she was forced to sit this game out after suffering an injury in pre-game warm-ups before GBC's contest with Felician last Sunday. She was honored before the game and presented with flowers by head coach John Cappiello.
The Lightning (2-12-1) dominated this game right from the start, scoring early and often in the first half before letting their foot off the gas and cruising in the second half. GBC's eight goals were the most by a Lightning team since an 11-0 victory over Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist) on Sept. 8, 2008.
Sophomore forward Kelly Williams led the Lightning first-half surge by scoring four of GBC's seven first-half goals. Williams became the first Lightning player to record four goals in a game since April Yanacek tallied four times in a 6-2 win over Bloomfield back on Oct. 8, 2006. She also surpassed junior Karin Eriksson's mark of nine goals in a season (set in both 2008 and 2009) and ranks third on the school's all-time list with 11 goals this season. Williams also cracked into the top-five of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in goals and points (22).
Williams scored the first goal of the afternoon 2:15 into the action when she finished a cross from Eriksson. The assist was Eriksson's first of the year.
Nearly seven minutes later, freshman midfielder Tess Beukers would tally her second goal of the season when she struck the ball from about 25 yards out and beat Lincoln goalkeeper Isata Panda to the upper portion of the net.
Eriksson would then score her first of two goals on the day when she scored off a thru ball by junior Marissa Valladares. The Valladares assist was her team-leading third of the season.
Then it was back to the Kelly Williams show as she added three consecutive goals to put her team in front 6-0. The first of these three was assisted by sophomore Joniqua Washington, a reserve player for the Lightning the last two seasons. The assist was Washington's first of her career, and part of a three-point afternoon as she added a goal later on as well.
Just 1:30 before the half, Eriksson scored her second goal of the day on a breakaway as she received a lovely thru pass from junior Taylor Faunt. The assist was Faunt's second of the season, and the goal was Eriksson's fourth. Eriksson still ranks third on the school's all-time career goals list with 22.
GBC took a 7-0 advantage into the intermission, out-shooting Lincoln 20-2 in the first stanza and taking four corner kicks to zero by the Lions.
Lightning goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt preserved a first-half shutout by making two saves. She was relieved by sophomore Alyssa Vetrano, who also made saves to keep the shutout intact.
Washington added the Lightning's eighth goal of the day two minutes into the second half for her first career goal off the first career assist for junior Ashley Steele.
GBC coasted from that point on and held on for the 8-0 season finale win.
