Stoffer Leads Lightning to Sweep of Bowie State

GBC celebrates "Dig Pink" night with a victory

PIKE CREEK, Del. – Junior middle hitter Rebecca Stoffer had 13 kills, three service aces and two solo blocks to lead the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team to a dominant 3-0 win over Bowie State on Dig Pink Night at the Joseph West Jones Center.

Goldey-Beacom won the match in straight sets: 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 and improved to 7-15 on the season. Bowie State fell to 4-22 with the loss.

The Lightning took part in the “Dig Pink” breast cancer awareness rally sponsored by the Sideout Foundation. They wore pink socks and pink bows in their hair to promote the cause.

GBC outhit the Bulldogs .211 to -.11 for the night, led by Stoffer's astounding .650 hitting percentage as a result of a season-high 13 kills with zero errors. Also, Junior Roni Shaner and sophomore Monica Dempsey combined for 11 kills, 24 assists and 15 digs for the night. Freshman Tyla Wells pitched in with four kills as well.

The Lightning played a fantastic first set, recording 15 kills as a team to just four errors on 31 swings (.355 hitting percentage). Stoffer led the way with seven kills in the set while Shaner connected for three consecutive kills on her first three swings and finished the first set with four kills. Brelyn Finley tallied five of her seven kills for the night, but the Bulldogs managed just seven kills as a team for the set to go with seven errors. GBC took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-16 first-set win.

Set two saw the Lightning capitalize on eight Bulldog hitting errors while Stoffer stayed hot with six kills on nine attempts. Wells added two kills and sophomore middle hitter Catherine Howard pitched in two kills as well. The Lightning held BSU to -.18 hitting as they won the second set, 25-15.

Dempsey led the offensive charge in the third set as she recorded three kills to help GBC claim the match victory with a 25-11, third-set win. Bowie State again hit -.18 as a team with just four kills to eight errors as the Lightning cruised. Shaner and Wells each had two kills in the set.

Next up for GBC is the fourth and final match of the Lightning's four-match homestand at the Jones Center. They will host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Caldwell at 1 p.m. on Sat. afternoon.
