PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team lost to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Post University, 3-0 on Homecoming Sat. at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Eagles won three highly-contested sets by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-21. The Lightning fell to 6-14 overall and 1-11 in the CACC while Post improved to 7-14 (5-5 CACC).
Twice the Lightning held late leads but failed to finish off the Eagles as they fell down 2-0 and could not regroup in the third set. The first set saw Post grab an early 5-0 lead, but GBC came back and took a 17-15 lead and forced a Post timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles regrouped and outscored GBC 8-6 to win the set.
Then in the second set, the Lightning held a 20-12 advantage, but allowed Post to score 14 of the game's next 18 points and snatch a 2-0 match lead with a 26-24 set win.
Post controlled the lead for the majority of the third set, closing out the match with a 25-21 third set victory.
The Lightning were led by sophomore Monica Dempsey who had team-highs of six kills and 14 digs as well as six assists. Junior Roni Shaner also pitched in with a team-high 10 assists, five kills and seven digs. Shaner added one service ace as well, as she tied Tessa Snyder ('06) for fourth on the school's all-time career aces list with 120.
Freshman outside hitter Tyla Wells had five kills and zero errors on seven attach attempts (.714 hitting percentage) and senior defensive specialist A.J. Hicks had her ninth double-figure dig game of the season with 12. Hicks has been in double-figures in the dig column five consecutive matches.
Leading Post was Elizabeth Knight with 16 kills, one service ace, three digs and one solo block. Kelli Reynolds and Stephanie Zarakas each added nine and eight kills, respectively. Taylor Doyle directed the Eagles offense, which out-hit GBC .214 to .205, with 36 assists.
Next up for GBC is the second of four straight home matches at the Jones Center as the Lightning will host the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
