TAKOMA PARK, Md. – After digging itself into a 15-4 hole six minutes into the game, the visiting Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team fought its way back and ultimately took control to complete the season sweep of non-league opponent Washington Adventist University with a decisive 78-45 victory Tues. night.
The Lightning (5-8), which managed to win without their leading scorer, redshirt-sophomore Jacinda Jones and key reserve, freshman forward Irene Hudson, have now won three of their last four games, including the last two. WAU fell to 0-17 for the season.
Sophomore guard Evebonee Acosta led five Lightning players in double-figures with a game-high 16 points off the bench. Also coming off the bench to score in double-figures were sophomore guard Lindsay Duck (13 points, four rebounds), freshman forward Akilah Sewell (10 points, six rebounds), and sophomore forward Samantha Sanchez (10 points), who has been sidelined for most of this season with an injury but was able to play a season-high 15 minutes. The Lightning's bench outscored the Shock's 49-10 for the game.
Junior guard Janae Weldon also pitched in 10 points, including two three-point field goals to jump-start the Lightning's run to get back into the game early on. Redshirt-freshman guard Ashley Rosario was also key in the Lightning's comeback with an outstanding all-around game (five points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals).
The Shock scored the first four points of the game and then opened up a 15-4 lead on the strength of seven points by Erin Duffie (12 points, four rebounds) and five by Quianna Tiggle. But GBC, which dominated the last meeting against WAU on Dec. 3, 73-31, took control with a 15-2 run to take its first lead of the game, 19-17.
After a Rebecca Lee layup for the Shock tied the score at 19, Weldon hit her second three of the game at 5:47, and the Lightning never looked back. They would close out the half on a 14-3 run and take a 33-22 advantage into the break.
Two free-throws by Kayla Harrison (eight points, four assists) at the 18:10 mark would bring WAU within 10 (36-26), but that would be the closest the Shock would get. The Lightning would nearly double-up WAU in the second half, outscoring the Shock 45-23 as they cruised to a 78-45 victory.
The Lightning will now get set to face the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J. Thurs. night at 6 p.m.
