PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team, despite graduate senior Kellyn Nolan's four kills and freshman Monica Dempsey's six assists, fell on the road at Holy Family Tues. night, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Lightning (7-15, 2-10 CACC) lost 25-14 in the first set, gave a valiant effort in the second set, but still lost 25-20, and finally lost 25-9 in the third set. Holy Family improved to 9-16 (7-4 CACC) with the win.
In the first set, the Lightning fell behind quickly as HFU's Aimee Drabyn and Katie Hornback led the Tigers on a 10-1 run. GBC could never pull within seven as the Tigers ran away with a 25-14 first set win.
With senior Lauren Witzke serving, the Lightning grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second set, but an Aly Keihl kill started a 6-0 HFU run led again by Drabyn's service.
GBC fought to stay in the match and eventually tied the score at 10, helped by a service ace apiece from graduate senior Christine Hudock and junior A.J. Hicks. Senior Chalea Johnson and Dempsey each pitched in with a kill as well.
A series of service and attack errors by both teams would lead to several lead changes and ties, but it was the Lightning who looked as though they were going to pull away, up 18-15 when HFU called a timeout.
The Tigers re-focused and came out of the timeout with an explosive 4-0 run led by two kills apiece by Hornback and Jill Keeve to take the lead back at 19-18.
GBC responded with a kill by Johnson off a Dempsey assist to knot the score at 19, and following a Lightning attack error, got a kill by redshirt freshman Renee DeLeo to tie the score again at 20.
But Keeve's kill started a 5-0 Tiger run to close out the set, 25-20. Lightning head coach Rich Bowers tried to settle his team down after two attack errors and Keeve's kill GBC down 23-20, but it made no difference as Brittany La Couture finished the Lightning off with two consecutive kills.
GBC never led in the third set. Falling behind 4-1 early, the Lightning never quite got their footing. Down 11-8, GBC suffered an 11-0 Tiger run led by two Keeve service aces and four HFU kills.
A kill by Hudock would stop the bleeding and make the score 22-9, but the Tigers would then run off three straight points, winning the set (25-9) and the match on an ace by Jennifer O'Connor.
GBC is back in action on Thurs. night at 7 p.m. as the Lightning host CACC foe Chestnut Hill College in their Dig Pink game for breast cancer awareness.
