Lincoln, PA – Lightning Volleyball wins first match in five

The Goldey-Beacom College Lightning Volleyball team opened their season against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania.

The first set opened up and as new teams are bound to do for a small amount time, the Lightning struggled to get a pass and earn points.  Even with a small comeback in the middle of the first set and with the back and forth point scoring at the end the Lincoln Lions took the first set 28-26.

The second set was a change in demeanor for the Lightning.  They went out on the court and served the ball well, passed the ball and earned a second set victory over the Lions 25-16.

With the momentum still swinging in the Lightning's favor the third set began with a small run by Freshman Roni Shaner.  The lead increased with the Lightning's serves going deep into the court, causing not so perfect passing for the Lions.  The Lightning took the third set 25-18.

With the fourth set underway, it seemed as though the Lightning would take this set and win the match.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case.  The Lions finished the set with a 25-22 win over the Lightning forcing the match to a fifth and deciding set.

The Lightning stepped out on the court for the fifth set and never looked back.  With communication and good passing and serving the Lightning took the match with a fifth set win of 15-9.

The Lightning were led by defensive specialist Christine Hudock with 12 digs, outside hitter Amanda Mills with 7 kills, middle hitter Chantal Pierre with 6 kills, and setter Roni Shaner with 17 set assists.

The Lightning next play a tri-match at Virginia Union on September 5, 2008.
