8/7/2024 12:00:00 AM

(2024 schedule)

Veteran leadership along with a new head coach should mark continued improvement for Goldey-Beacom's Volleyball squad, which has announced its 2024 schedule.

GBC opens things September 6 with matches against Queens (NY) and Southern Connecticut State in New Haven before playing at Mercy the next day.  The home opener is September 10 against West Chester and play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference starts the 18th at home vs. Holy Family.

The squad from September 20-21 play four matches in Frostburg, MD before home tilts September 28 against West Chester and Millersville.

October begins with a home match on the 2nd against Georgian Court and the 5th vs. reigning CACC champion Bridgeport as part of Homecoming & Lightning Family Weekend.  The weekend's events include opportunities for alums to come back on campus to reunite with many friends and also see the many changes that many who continue to be part of the family help ignite.  It also will give an opportunity for parents to come on campus and spend time with their kids as part of an atmosphere filled with festivities and fun.

GBC the following week visits South Division champion Jefferson before traveling to Post.  The squad then has a four-match homestand that begins against local-rival Wilmington (DE) on October 16.

The team plays its home finale November 13 against Jefferson and visits Wilmington (DE) three days later to close the regular season.

The top four teams in each of the two divisions (North and South) make the conference tournament.  The quarterfinals are November 19 and championship weekend is November 23-24 on the campus of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ.

The Lightning are ecstatic to welcome back senior outside hitter Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL), an energetic competitor who has been one of the squad's catalysts the last three years.  A solid athlete who has given her all in helping make the team better, Nanouski last year started every match and closed 42nd in the league with 125 kills.

Nanouski enters the year with 586 career kills, 51 outside the school's top-10 list.

Junior middle blocker Megan Chesser (Grove City, OH) for two years has been a vital player with her strong hitting, solid blocking and outstanding serve.  Another key in helping make the program better and also a member of the track & field team, Chesser last season ended 37th in the country with 0.51 aces per set (ninth in the CACC), 20th in the league with 33 aces and 40th with 29 blocks.

Sophomore right side Ma'kayla Coats (Ann Arbor, MI) made an immediate appearance in the lineup and did not relinquish, showing impressive hitting and signs that she will continue to be a key component.  She ended last season second on the team with 80 kills.

The Lightning begin anew this season with the addition of Alexa Poss as its new head coach.  The improvement already has been apparent with the squad getting a hard-fought, five-set victory in the spring over Bowie State.

Poss in 2022 took over a squad at Albright College that the previous year went 5-11 and ended the season with seven consecutive losses.  Things changed her first season with a 10-13 record and continued into last year, when the Lions went 16-10 and won eight straight matches midway through the campaign.
