WILMINGTON, Del. - After having its season opener postponed last week, the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team will open its 2013 schedule with a pair of tough Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests this week.
The Lightning will kick off the season on Thursday, Sept. 12 by visiting Holy Family University for a 4 p.m. contest before traveling to Caldwell on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a 12 p.m. match-up against the Cougars.
Coming off a 3-13-0 season last year, the Lightning return three of their top five scorers from a season ago. Senior forward
Danielle Semenza (Hazleton Area H.S./Hazle Township, Pa.) was the Lightning's second-leading scorer last year with four goals and an assist while junior forward
Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.) contributed a team-high three assists.
While the Lightning's roster features seven returning letter winners from last year's squad, a large portion of this year's team will consist of newcomers, including eight freshmen.
Entering Thursday's action, Holy Family will be trying to earn its first win of the season after a pair of losses against Shippensburg and New York Institute of Technology. Junior forward
Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy H.S./Langhorne, Pa.) scored the Tigers' lone goal in the 3-1 loss against NYIT on Saturday.
Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper
Sienna Smith (Pottsville Regional H.S./Pottsville, Pa.) has started both games for the Tigers this season and has a .714 save percentage while allowing 3.0 goals per contest.
Currently 1-1-0 on the season, the Cougars will host LIU Post on Thursday afternoon before facing the Lightning on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars opened the 2013 season last Friday with a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce before dropping a 4-0 decision against Southern New Hampshire.
Junior defender
Lauren Iuliucci (Delsea H.S./Franklinville, N.J.) led the Cougars to the victory over Franklin Pierce by scoring the game-winning goal in the 79th minute. In addition to being named as the CACC Player of the Week, she was honored as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Player of the Week.
Meanwhile, junior
Robin Franchi (Deptford H.S./Sewell, N.J.) and freshman
Kylie Whalen (Raritan H.S./Hazlet, N.J.) have split time in goal for Caldwell in the first two games. Franchi made five saves in the Cougars' win over Franklin Pierce while Whalen had a two-save performance against Southern New Hampshire.
After their two road matches this week, the Lightning will be idle until Saturday, Sept. 21 when they face Post University in their home opener.
