WILMINGTON, Del. – Sophomore infielder
Jamie Smith (Boyertown H.S./Pine Forge, Pa.) collected three hits and scored three runs to lead East Stroudsburg University (2-4) to its first wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep over Goldey-Beacom College (0-4) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
After claiming an 8-1 victory in the opener, the Warriors held off the Lightning to post a 6-4 triumph in the nightcap.
The Warriors erupted for four runs in the third inning of the first game to take a 4-0 lead. With one out in the inning, junior catcher
Rebecca Smith (Ichabod Crane H.S./Valatie, N.Y.) drove in the Warriors' first run with a sacrifice fly to center field. After a single by sophomore infielder
Cara McNeil (Parsippany Hills H.S./Mount Tabor, N.J.) upped the lead to 2-0 with a single up the middle, the Warriors added two more runs when sophomore
Cara Woods (Glen Burnie, Md.) singled to right field and advanced to second base on an error, allowing McNeil and senior outfielder
Jennifer Denaro (Pleasant Valley H.S./Saylorsburg, Pa.) to score.
The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior third baseman
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) to score.
But, the Warriors answered by scoring three times in the top of the fifth inning. After McNeil extended the advantage to 5-1 with an RBI single, Woods hit a two-run single to left field to give East Stroudsburg a commanding 7-1 advantage.
The Warriors added another run in the top of the seventh inning on a fielding error by the Lightning.
In the nightcap, the Lightning took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Alonzo hit an RBI double to left center field.
But, East Stroudsburg answered with three runs in the top of the second inning to claim a two-run advantage. After junior
Amanda McKay (Babylon H.S./West Babylon, N.Y.) drove in a run with a double to left center field, freshman
Kellie Mignoli (Wantagh H.S./Wantagh, N.Y.) gave the Warriors a 2-1 edge when she singled to left field and advanced to third base on a fielding error, allowing McKay to score from second base.
An RBI single by freshman
Sierra Wagner (Downingtown West H.S./Coatesville, Pa.) extended the Warriors' lead to 3-1.
The Lightning tied the game in the bottom of the inning as freshman
Madison Newhouser (North Schuylkill H.S./Ashland, Pa.) and junior
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) drove in two runs after hitting back-to-back doubles.
But, a three-run inning for the Warriors in the top of the third inning regained the advantage. After Rebecca Smith scored on a wild pitch to give East Stroudsburg a 4-3 lead, Mignoli drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Woods. Jamie Smith upped the Warriors' cushion to 6-3 when she scored on a passed ball by freshman catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.).
The Lightning narrowed the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alonzo hit another RBI double to left field, but freshman
