NEW CASTLE, Del. – Sophomore forward
Jakob Passernig (Dripping Spring H.S./Austin, Texas) scored a goal and added an assist as Philadelphia University (2-0-1, 1-0-0) extended its unbeaten streak to three straight matches with a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (1-2-0, 0-1-0) in the Lightning's home opener at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
After opening the season with a 1-1 draw against 25th-ranked Charleston, the Rams have won back-to-back games. They have outscored their opponents by a 5-1 margin during the win streak.
Just over two minutes into the second half, freshman midfielder
Patrick Groh (Emmaus H.S./Macungie, Pa.) gave Philadelphia University a 1-0 lead when he scored the first goal of his college career. He gathered a loose ball in the penalty area after a crossing pass from Passernig and scored past senior goalkeeper
Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela).
With 18:16 left in the second half, the Rams upped the advantage to 2-0 when Passernig took a crossing pass from freshman forward
Ishmaiah Calwrie (Randallstown H.S./Baltimore, Md.) and scored his first goal of the year with a shot to the left side.
The Rams extended their advantage to 3-0 with eight minutes remaining when sophomore forward
Victor Chagonda (Harare, Zimbabwe) took a pass from sophomore midfielder
Mark Louro (Manheim Township H.S./Lancaster, Pa.) and chipped a shot over Farias and into the far side of the goal.
While Passernig led the Rams with a goal and an assist, sophomore goalkeeper
Neil Kwiatkowski (Duanesburg H.S./Schnectady, N.Y.) made two saves to earn his first shutout of the season.
Farias made three saves in a losing effort for the Lightning, who were outshot by a 19-6 margin. Goldey-Beacom had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Lightning, who have dropped back-to-back matches after a season-opening 2-1 victory over Saint Michael's, will continue their three-match homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 12 against Wilmington University at 4 p.m.
