WILMINGTON, Del. - Looking to earn its first win of the season, the Lightning women's soccer team will begin a busy week on Tuesday afternoon by welcoming Washington Adventist University to the Kirkwood Soccer Complex for a non-conference match at 2 p.m.
It will be the first game of a soccer doubleheader at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Tuesday as the Lightning men's team will face the Shock in the second game at 4 p.m.
The Lightning, who have lost all seven games this season, dropped a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference decision against Dominican on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward
Tiffany Kelly (Parsippany H.S./Parsippany, N.J.) gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when she tallied the first goal of her college career.
In addition, Kelly's goal allowed the Lightning to take a 1-0 lead for just the second time this year. They also gained the early advantage in the season opener on Sept. 1 against Mansfield.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Vetrano (Shore Regional H.S./Ocean, N.J.) tallied seven saves in the loss on Saturday afternoon. With 42 saves in seven games this season, Vetrano is tied for sixth in the CACC.
Off to a 3-4-0 start this season, the Shock have been idle since earning a 2-1 victory over Gallaudet on Wednesday afternoon. The Shock used goals from senior midfielder
Kelsey Sheehan-Wright (Elizabeth Seton H.S./Hyattsville, Md.) and senior forward
Dannielle Panuccio (Blue Mountain Academy/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) to build a 2-0 lead in the first 46 minutes before holding onto to beat the Bison.
Panuccio leads the Shock with nine goals and two assists while Sheehan-Wright has contributed two goals with two assists. Freshman goalkeeper
Taylor Noel (Western Branch H.S./Chesapeake, Va.) has started all seven games for the Shock, posting a 3.45 goals against average while stopping 75.6 per cent of the shots she has faced.
Led by two goals from sophomore forward
Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.), the Lightning scored three goals in the first half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Shock in last year's meeting. Senior forward
Kelly Williams (Copiague H.S./Copiague, N.Y.) added a pair of assists in the victory for the Lightning, who outshot the Shock by a 27-6 margin.
The Lightning will continue their busy schedule on Thursday night when they travel to Delaware State for a 7 p.m. non-conference match against the Lady Hornets.
