Live Stats: Goldey-Beacom at Dominican
WILMINGTON, Del. - After ending its three-match homestand with a tough 3-1 loss against Chestnut Hill on Wednesday afternoon, the Lightning women's soccer team will try to earn its first win of the season on Saturday against Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the DC Athletic Field. Opening kick-off is slated for 12:30 p.m.
Now 0-6-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the CACC, the Lightning allowed two first half goals against the Griffins on Wednesday at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex before getting an own goal in the 75th minute when sophomore forward
Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.) sent a ball into the penalty area that was deflected by a Griffin defender into the goal.
But, the Griffins secured the victory in the 83rd minute with an insurance goal to spoil the Lightning's chances at the win.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Vetrano (Shore Regional H.S./Ocean, N.J.) made four saves in a losing effort for the Lightning, who outshout the Griffins by a 16-13 margin and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior forward
Danielle Semenza (Hazleton Area H.S./Hazle Township, Pa.) and senior forward
Kelly Williams (Copiague H.S./Copiague, N.Y.) have each scored a goal for the Lightning this season while Vetrano has posted a 2.67 goals against average while stopping 69.2 per cent of the shots she has faced.
Off to a 2-4-0 start, including a 1-2-0 mark in the CACC, the Chargers have won two of their last three games after opening the year with a three-game losing streak. They will be looking for their second straight win after posting a 4-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon.
In their two wins this year, the Chargers have outscored their opponents by a 9-3 margin. However, in their four losses, the Chargers have been limited to just three goals while allowing 11 goals.
Junior forward
Olivia Antonopoulos (Baldwin Senior H.S./Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Chargers to the victory on Wednesday with a "hat trick" as Dominican sprinted out to a 4-0 advantage in the first 68 minutes of the match. Antonopoulos scored the first three goals for the Chargers, including two in the second half. Meanwhile, goalkeeper
Veronica Iozzi (Mendham H.S./Chester, N.J.) made three saves in the victory for Dominican, which outshot the Spartans by a 12-8 margin.
Antonopoulos leads the Chargers with six goals this season while junior midfielder
Danielle Romano (Bethpage H.S./Plainview, N.Y.) has contributed two goals. Meanwhile, Iozzi has played every minute in goal for the Chargers this year and has a 2.22 goals against average while stopping 73.1 per cent of the shots she has faced.
The Lightning will return home on Tuesday afternoon to host Washington Adventist University at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex at 2 p.m.
