WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman outside hitter
Desirae Lair (Las Vegas H.S./Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded a season-high 20 kills and hit .395 as the University of the Sciences (4-5, 1-0) held off a late rally by Goldey-Beacom College (4-6, 0-2) to snap a three-match losing streak with a four-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lightning at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Monday evening.
Led by Lair, the Devils won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-22. After the Lightning rallied to take a 26-24 victory in the third set, University of the Sciences won the match in the fourth set with a 25-19 triumph.
While Lair led the Devils to the victory, junior middle hitter
Diana Solomon (East Islip H.S./East Islip, N.Y.) posted her first “double double” of the season by recording 13 kills with 13 digs. Meanwhile, freshman middle hitter
Caitlyn Crawford (Covington H.S./Covington, Ohio) tallied 16 kills and three service aces.
Sophomore setter
Kaileen Bevenour (Pennsbury H.S./Levittown, Pa.) posted a match-high 54 assists with four digs and three kills, marking the second time this season she has tallied 50 or more assists.
Senior setter/opposite
Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) led the Lightning by recording the fifth “triple double” of her career with 11 kills, 15 assists and 15 digs. She also hit a season-high .417 in the match with just one attack error.
Meanwhile, sophomore outside hitter
Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) nearly recorded a “double double” with 15 kills and 9 digs while freshman
Jamika Townsend (King's Fork H.S./Suffolk, Va.) posted the first “double double” of her college career with a season-high 25 assists and 12 digs.
The Lightning, who have lost five of their last six matches after a three-match win streak, will begin a three-match road trip on Wednesday evening by traveling to Chestnut Hill College for a 7 p.m. CACC match against the Griffins.
