Volleyball Finishes Season Against Post and Concordia

Lightning to Celebrate Senior Night on Friday

WILMINGTON, Del.
- Hoping to finish the season on a positive note, the Lightning volleyball team will complete its 2012 schedule this weekend with a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matches. After hosting Post University on Friday evening at the Joseph West Jones College Center, the Lightning will travel to Purchase College on Saturday morning to face Concordia in the season finale.

Now 4-21 overall and 0-17 in the CACC, the Lightning will be trying to rebound after dropping a three-set decision against Philadelphia University on Wednesday night at the Gallagher Center. Sophomore outside hitter Kadi McCoy (Dallastown H.S./Dallastown, Pa.) led the Lightning by posting her seventh “double double” of the season with a match-high 14 kills with 11 digs.

Meanwhile, senior setter/opposite Monica Dempsey (Secaucus H.S./Secaucus, N.J.) added a “double double” with 13 assists and 10 digs while freshman setter Jamika Townsend (King's Fork H.S./Suffolk, Va.) contributed 14 assists and 12 digs.

Entering this weekend's matches, McCoy ranks second in the CACC with a 3.42 kill per set average and 304 total kills. The CACC leader in points per set with a 3.9 average, McCoy has averaged 12.8 kills over her last five matches, including a career-high 24 kills in the Lightning's five-set loss against Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Dempsey ranks fifth in the CACC by averaging 0.48 service aces per set. She enters this weekend's matches needing 94 assists to become the second player in school history to record 2,000 career assists. In addition, she ranks third on the Lightning's all-time list with 178 career service aces.

Prior to Friday night's match, Dempsey, senior middle hitter Catherine Howard (William Penn H.S./New Castle, Del.) and senior manager Julianne Powers will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.

Currently 9-16 overall and 8-9 in the CACC, the Eagles enter the weekend's matches in fourth place in the CACC North Division standings despite dropping a five-set match against Concordia on Thursday evening. The Eagles have lost five of their last seven matches, but will be finishing a five-match road trip this weekend by facing the Lightning and Wilmington.

Graduate student outside hitter Kelli Reynolds (Jonathan Law H.S./Stamford, Conn.) leads the Eagles with 233 kills and also ranks fifth in the CACC with a .285 hitting percentage. She tallied a match-high 17 kills in the loss against Concordia on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, junior outside hitter Emily Wilman (Union Catholic H.S./Perth Amboy, N.J.), who ranks second on the team with 229 kills, added a "double double" with 13 kills and 12 digs on Thursday night while sophomore setter Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) contributed six service aces and 11 digs.

Despite beating the Eagles in a five-set match on Thursday night, the Clippers remain in fifth place in the CACC's North Division and trail the Eagles in the standings entering the final weekend of the regular season. Concordia, which has won two of its last three matches, will enter Saturday's action against Goldey-Beacom with a 6-17 overall record and a 6-11 CACC mark.

Junior outside hitter Irina Impellittiere (Haldane H.S./Cold Spring, N.Y.) led the Clippers with 16 kills against the Eagles while sophomore Leina Braga (Salvador, Brazil) added 12 kills. Meanwhile, junior setter Alicia Vogel (Edison H.S./Huntington Beach, Calif.) added a match-high 45 assists.

Braga leads the Clippers with 221 kills and ranks third on the team with 36 blocks while senior middle blocker Chelsea Zurcher (South River H.S./Crofton, Md.) has added 183 kills with a team-high 56 blocks.
