PHILADELPHIA - The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team earned its second consecutive shutout victory and evened its record at 3-3 as the visiting Lightning defeated University of the Sciences, 3-0 in both teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season openers.

GBC won three highly-contested sets by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-15. The match win was the Lightning's first in nine tries, as their last victory over USciences came on Oct. 18, 2006.

Freshmen outside hitters Kadi McCoy (11 kills, eight digs) and Taylor Moyer (10 kills, nine digs) and freshman libero Niki Receveur (14 digs) were key to the Lightning's first conference season-opening win since 2008. Junior setter Monica Dempsey (27 assists) and senior Roni Shaner (three service aces) also played major roles.

The Lightning scored the first three points of the match and continued to lead throughout much of the first set until the Devils tied the score at 14-14.  GBC ran off the next four points to take a 19-14 lead and later led 20-17 before the Devils rallied for five straight points to take a 22-20 lead.  USciences still led by two, 23-21 when the Lightning regained the serve and Demspey served out the set for a 25-23 win.

In the second set, the Lightning jumped out to an early 12-7 advantage and slowly pulled away, as the Devils managed just three points while controlling the serve, leading to a 25-15 Lightning win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Devils fared a little better in the final set, scoring five points while serving, but the result was the same, a 25-15 loss allowing the Lightning to complete the sweep.  GBC broke a 5-5 tie early with an 11-2 run to take a commanding 16-7 lead.  USciences could only close the gap to six, 18-12 before the Lightning closed things out with a 7-3 run.

GBC travels to Cheyney, Pa. on Sat. for a tri-match at Cheyney University's "The Den." The Lightning play the host Wolves at 12 p.m. and then take on Mercy College at 2 p.m.
