BOWIE, Md. - The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team used a stellar team offensive attack to beat host Bowie State 3-0 on Tues. night in non-conference play at the A.C. Jordan Gym.
The Lightning (2-3) hit their highest percentage of the young season - .296, to win in straight sets: 25-13, 25-7 and 25-18. GBC has now won the last four meetings between these two schools.
Freshman outside hitter
Taylor Moyer continued her tear of Lightning non-conference opponents as she collected eight kills (.438 hitting percentage) and three service aces. Fellow hitters, seniors
Rebecca Stoffer (three aces) and
Roni Shaner tallied five and four kills, respectively. Shaner hit an impressive .667 as she had four kills and zero errors in six attack attempts. She also had a career-high 11 service aces.
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honorable mention selection
Monica Dempsey had her fifth straight match of 20 or more assists, as tonight the junior captain gave out 24 to go with a service ace and five digs.
Freshman libero
Niki Receveur led the Lightning defensively with nine digs and she pitched in with one of GBC's nine service aces for the night.
The first set saw the Lightning blow away the Bulldogs with a 17-3 run that led to a commanding 20-6 lead. Shaner's first kill of the match broke a 3-3 tie and began the Lightning surge, which was helped along by two Stoffer service aces and three
Kadi McCoy kills. Shaner also added two service aces during the rally.
Fittingly, Shaner finished off the set with a kill to give the Lightning a 25-13 win and a 1-0 match lead. As a team, GBC hit .435 for the set with 10 kills and zero errors.
Bowie State (0-5) made things interesting early on in the second set, pulling within one (6-5) on a Cara Nance kill. But GBC countered with a 16-0 run to put the set out of reach, 22-5.
Freshman
Emily Shustack started the 16-0 run with a kill off an assist from Dempsey. From there, Shaner again overpowered BSU with her serve, collecting nine service aces (including five in a row).
Sophomore
Stephanie Kline finished off the set with a service ace to give the Lightning an impressive 25-7 set two win.
Again the two teams traded points in the early-going. The Lightning climbed out to leads of 5-2, 11-5, but Bowie State hung around initially. With a 13-10 lead, GBC distanced itself with a 6-0 run to go up 19-10. Moyer had two kills and senior
Amanda Mills pitched in with a kill during the run.
From that point on, the Lightning never allowed BSU within five points as consecutive kills by junior
Catherine Howard and Stoffer finished off the set and the match, 25-18.
GBC returns to the court tomorrow night for its conference season opener on the road against University of the Sciences at 7 p.m.
