SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Freshman Juan Perez and senior Rob Cann both scored goals for the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team, but the Lightning could not stove off a relentless Shippensburg attack as they fell to the host Red Raiders, 3-2 on Sat. night.
The Lightning (0-2) managed just two shots all night, but took advantage of their limited opportunities by scoring on both shots. Meanwhille, the Red Raiders (1-1) took 30 shots and put 12 of those on net to score three goals. Shippensburg also took 10 corner kicks to the Lightning's one.
Perez scored the Lightning's first goal of the season and the first of his collegiate career. The Middletown, Del. native won a one-on-one matchup with defender Austin Hill and fired a shot that deflected past Shippensburg goalkeeper Clay Sale to give GBC an early 1-0 advantage.
GBC maintained that 1-0 lead until just before the end of the first half when Shippensburg's Alex Prosser's run down the right side of the field led to a header goal by Andrew Collier in the 43rd minute. This marked the second consecutive game that the Lightning have surrendered a goal with under five minutes remaining before intermission.
Riding the momentum of its goal before halftime, Shippensburg took the lead in the 59th minute when Logan Henke capitalized on a loose ball in the box. A crossing pass dipped low into the net and ricocheted off GBC goaltender Ignacio Farias' hands, caroming back to Henke, who fired a low missile into the net.
Fred Lucas, who recorded a game-high five shots for the Red Raiders, made it 3-1 in the 70th minute with a run down the right side that ended with a safe finish past the keeper.
In the 86th minute, Cann finished off a pretty passing play to bring the Lightning within a goal. Perez and Andre Jank were credited with assists for their one-touch passes that preceded the Cann strike.
Farias gave a valiant effort in goal for the Lightning, making nine saves in the loss.
