PHILADELPHIA - The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team won the second set of Tues. night's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest with South Diision foe Philadelphia University, but that would be all as the host Rams defeated the Lightning, 3-1. The scores of the four sets were as follows: 25-18, 17-25, 25-22 and 25-23.
GBC fell back to .500 at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in league play with the loss while PhilaU improved to the same overall mark of 7-7 and 4-3 in the CACC.
Junior setter
Monica Dempsey recorded her third straight double-double for the Lightning which included 27 assists and a career-high 30 digs. She became the first GBC player to collect 30 digs in a match since Christine Hudock on Oct. 15, 2009. Dempsey, who entered the match ranked sixth in the nation in service aces per-set, also registered four aces in this match.
Freshman libero
Niki Receveur also gave the Lightning a lift defensively with 21 digs while classmate
Kadi McCoy led GBC offensively with 13 kills. Another freshman,
Taylor Moyer pitched in with eight kills for the night.
The Rams were led offensively by Brittany Olson and Jordan Milligan, who combined for 25 kills. Olson, with 15 digs, was one of four PhilaU players in double-figures for digs. As a team, the Rams totaled 50 kills to the Lightning's 39, and also out-hit GBC .145 to .101.
Senior
Rebecca Stoffer earned the first point of the match with a kill for the Lightning, but that would be Goldey-Beacom's only lead of the set as PhilaU quickly regrouped and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead. The Rams extended their lead to as many as six, but a 7-2 Lightning surge brought the visitors within a point, down 13-12. GBC would close to within a point twice more, but PhilaU put the score out of reach with a 6-0 run to go up 23-16, and eventually closed out the set, 25-18.
A re-energized Lightning squad turned an early 4-2 deficit in set two into a 7-4 lead, taking advantage of four consecutive Ram attack errors to put together a 5-0 run. PhilaU responded by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 10-9 lead. Down 11-10, the Lightning went on a 7-1 rally to take a 17-12 lead, and they eventually went on to win by their largest margin of the game, 25-17. With that win, GBC had evened the match, 1-1.
In set three, the Lightning seemed in control early on as they led 5-2 and 7-4, before PhilaU rallied back to take the lead 9-8 after a service ace by Adrienne Stigura. The Rams later pushed their lead to four, 14-10, before a 7-0 Lightning run put GBC in front, 17-14. Senior
Roni Shaner kick-started the rally with a kill and later added another one off an assist from Dempsey. Stoffer served four six straight points, including two service aces. The Rams responded though, with a 5-0 run to pull back ahead, 19-17, and they would never trail again. A McCoy kill culminated a 3-0 Lightning run to even the score at 21, but PhilaU closed out the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22.
Two service aces apiece by Dempsey and Stoffer and a kill by Moyer helped the Lightning grab a 7-1 cushion early on in set three, but PhilaU fought back with a 7-1 run of its own to knot the score at eight apiece. Back and forth went the lead as the two division rivals collided for seven ties and four lead changes. But with the Lightning ahead 17-16, PhilaU used a 6-0 run to move ahead 23-17. The Lightning showed no quit, scoring six of the next seven points to pull within one, 24-23. Rebekah Waybrant would finish off the match, however with a kill to give the Rams the 25-23 win and a 3-1 match victory.
GBC is back in action on Thurs. night as they visit crosstown rival Wilmington University for a rematch at 7 p.m.
