PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Anastasia Melnikova won the Women's B Singles draw to highlight the Goldey-Beacom College women's tennis team's appearance at the 2011 Wilson/ITA Regional Championships which concluded on Mon., Sept. 19.

Melnikova, the second GBC freshman in as many years to reach the B Singles finals, became the first-ever Lightning player to win an ITA draw. She defeated Southern New Hampshire's Kirsten Jean, 8-1 in the first round, bounced Alyssa Hayes of Bentley, 8-1 in the second round, defeated Katie Gilligan (SC), 8-4, and Bentley's Brittany Harbert in a grueling 8-6 match to finally reach the semifinals.

In the semifinals, she defeated Chestnut Hill College's Morgan Oechsle, 8-3, and in the finals she took down SC's Jen Denyes, 8-0.

Sophomore Gabriella Chaves nearly made it an all-GBC affair in the finals, but she fell to Denyes in the semifinals after a superb run. Juniors Melanie Bonomo and Vanessa Leon also both reached the second round of the B Singles draw.

Freshman Stephanie Puentes, a No. 11 seed in the Women's A Singles draw, received a first-round bye and then defeated Mercy's Shakee Messina, 6-3, 5-7, 10-3. She would then fall to eventual runner-up, Yuliya Plevako of Concordia.

Another freshman, Filipa Correia, won her first-round match, 6-2, 6-3 over PhilaU's Sayre Limburg. She would fall in the next round to Holy Family's Jin Querubin.

In the Women's B Doubles draw, juniors Blanca Sancho and Vanessa Leon advanced to the quarterfinals before they were upended by the eventual team champion of UDC's Maxime Duijst and Kristyna Nepivodova, 8-3.
