TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team won its third straight game as the visiting Lightning defeated non-conference opponent Washington Adventist handily, 4-1 on Tues. afternoon.
The Lightning improve to 3-2 on the season, and are on the program's longest win streak since GBC won four straight games to end the regular season in 2005. WAU fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Freshman Alex Smith, who came into the game leading the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in goals and points scored, recorded her eighth and ninth goals of the season this afternoon, both on assists from senior
Karin Eriksson. Junior
Kelly Williams, the CACC's leader in assists, also had two assists for the day.
GBC out-shot WAU 27-6, including an 18-3 disparity in the first half which led to a 3-0 halftime advantage. The Lightning also doubled-up The Shock in corner kicks (6-3). Senior
Kristin Degenhardt earned a share of the win in Lightning goal with three saves and no goals allowed in over 67 minutes of work. Junior
Alyssa Vetrano played the final 22:35 and allowed one goal.
Smith, as she did the previous two games, opened the scoring for GBC in the eighth minute off a pass from Eriksson. Freshman
Nicole Curry then scored her first collegiate goal nearly 10 minutes later to make it 2-0. Then Smith scored nearing the end of the half to put the game out of reach at 3-0.
The Lightning continued to be the aggressors in the second half, and senior
Marissa Valladares tallied her second goal of the season off Williams' second assist as the game approached the 60-minute mark.
WAU's Danielle Panuccio struck for an unassisted goal in the 86th minute, but it was too little too late as the Lightning cruised to the 4-1 victory.
