MANSFIELD, Pa. - Junior forward Kelly Williams' goal in the 85th minute forced overtime, but the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team succumbed to a Renae Bowman goal at 91:47 in the extra session and fell 2-1 to Mansfield University in its season opener Fri. afternoon.

Bowman, who also had an assist in the Erika Moyer game-opening goal in the 30th minute, scored the game-winner on a free ball that deflected off a Lightning defender's knee and popped up into the upper left corner of the net. It was the first and only shot taken in the extra session.

Senior goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt played the entire game and made seven saves while surrendering two goals in the loss. Mansfield keeper Alexis Wilhelm earned the win with five saves and one goal allowed.

The Lightning held a 7-6 shot advantage in the first half, but nonetheles, trailed 1-0 at intermission by virtue of a Moyer goal at 29:36. Amidst a two-on-one breakaway, Bowman's pass from right to left found the feet of Moyer, who beat the defender and scored to give the host's an early lead.

Mansfield out-shot GBC 11-7 in the second half, but it was the Lightning who eventually broke through with a goal with just over five minutes left to play in regulation. Williams' unassisted goal was the 13th of her career, and it sent the game to overtime. Ultimately, it was the Mounties who prevailed with a goal 1:47 into the extra session.

GBC took 14 shots as a team with six different players getting into the act. Redshirt-sophomore Danielle Semenza and freshman Alexandra Smith led the way with three shots apiece.

Adrianna Polimeni, Nicole Curry and Shaanna Headley never took a seat on the bench as they played outstanding defensively to keep the Lightning in the game.

Next up for the Lightning (0-1) is a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and season home opener against Philadelphia University. The Rams are 1-0 after defeating Tampa University, 1-0 on Thurs., Sept. 1.
