The Lightning scored the first two points of the match, but two kills and two service aces by Nyack's Amy Dorvick led to a 7-4 Nyack lead. The Warriors would lead by four twice, including a 16-12 advantage, before GBC ran off seven straight points thanks to the service of freshman
Taylor Moyer to go up 19-16 late in the first set.
Twice Nyack closed within a point, including when an assisted block by Tawnie Savage and Dorvick made the score 23-22, but consecutive Lightning kills by Shaner and Shustack gave GBC a 25-22 set victoy and 1-0 match lead.
GBC looked to be on its way to a 2-0 match lead as the Lightning scored the first four points of the match and continued to lead 7-4 in the early going. But a furious Warrior attack led to a 16-0 Nyack run to give the hosts a 20-7 lead. Dorvick served for 15 straight points while Allyson Roia and Debbie Schendell combined for eigt kills during the rally. The Warriors, who out-hit the Lightning .222 to -.16 went on the win the set, 25-11 and tie the match, 1-1.
With momentum on its side, Nyack jumped out to an 11-5 lead in set three and later owned a 14-9 advantage. But the Lightning fought back to force a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run. The Lightning played from behind for most of the set, falling behind 17-15, 20-17 and 22-20 before taking their first and only lead of the set, 23-22 with a kill by Stoffer. Moyer's kill would end the match and give the Lightning a come-from-behind, 25-23 set victory and a 2-1 match lead.
Nyack took control early in set four, storming out to an early 9-3 lead and never allowing the Lightning within five the rest of the way. The Warriors, much like in set two, dominated play as they out-hit the Lightning .263 to .094. They won by their biggest margin, 25-14, and sent the match to a fifth and deciding set.
Again riding the momentum of another dominant set victory, Nyack jumped out to a 3-0 lead courtesy of Savage and Dorvick kills and a Lightning attack error. But GBC, with four freshmen in the lineup, showed no panic as the Lightning erased the deficit with a 7-0 surge, led by the service of Dempsey. The Warriors had five attack errors during the run.
With the Lightning ahead 8-4 after a Stoffer kill, Savage led Nyack on a 5-0 run to regain the lead 9-8. But a service error gave GBC back the serve, and freshman
Shannon Waters made Nyack pay. Waters served for five straight points, three of them
Kadi McCoy kills, and the Lightning led 14-9.
McCoy's kill with the score 14-10 gave the Lightning the set victory and a 3-2 match win. This was GBC's first victory over Nyack in six tries, as the Lightning's last win over Nyack came on Oct. 14, 2006.
Next up for GBC is a rematch with non-conference foe Cheyney University at the Joseph West Jones Center on Tues., Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
