GBC vs. Cheyney
McCoy served two aces to start the match, and it was all Lightning from that point on. Junior
Monica Dempsey served 15 straight points in the first set, including seven aces, to give GBC an 18-1 advantage. The Lightning went on to take a 1-0 match lead with a commanding, 25-4 first-set win.
With a 1-0 advantage and ownership of the serve in set two, the Lightning rolled off 10 straight points, again behind the serve of Dempsey who tallied seven more aces during that stretch. GBC vs. Mercy
Goldey-Beacom spread its attack out, with two players recording six kills and three (senior Rebecca Stoffer, freshman Taylor Moyer and Dempsey) recording four. The Lightning also weathered Mercy's offensive assault with three double-digit dig totals, led by freshman defensive specialist Niki Receveur who had 13.
But Mercy came away with the 3-0 match win on the backs of Gebhardt and White and a team-effort at the setter position.
There were nine straight ties to start the match before Mercy created some distance with a 3-0 run to go up 12-9. The Mavericks would lead by as many as seven (18-11) before the Lightning rallied to score six of the next eight points to pull within three, 19-16.
Down 21-17, two Receveur service aces brought the Lightning within two, and later the deficit was just 22-21 after two consecutive Mercy errors. But the Mavericks closed out the set on a 3-0 run, highlighted by two White kills.
Dempsey got the Lightning off to a 2-0 lead in set two with a kill followed by a service ace, and GBC maintained the advantage until about halfway through the set.
After Mercy used a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the set, 13-12, the Mavericks never trailed again though the Lightning tied the score twice.
Down 24-22, Stoffer came through with a big kill to bring the Lightning within one, but facing match point once more, the Lightning could not hold off a match-ending kill by White.
The Lightning enter back into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they host crosstown rival Wilmington University in a South Division showdown at the Joseph West Jones Center.
