PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team defeated Bloomfield College, 3-1 on Sat. afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Joseph West Jones Center on Homecoming Saturday. The Lightning (9-10, 4-6 CACC) won by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 25-19 and 25-20.

This was the Lightning's first win over Bloomfield in the last five tries, dating back to Sept. 16, 2006. GBC remains just one match back of fourth-place Georgian Court (5-5) in the CACC South Division standings as the Lions cruised to a 3-0 win over Post on Sat.

Freshman Taylor Moyer led the way for GBC with 10 kills, two service aces and three blocks while classmates Kadi McCoy and Emily Shustack recorded eight and six kills, respectivley and combined for four blocks. Junior Monica Dempsey directed the offense with 26 assists and also contributed eight digs. Senior Roni Shaner had a match-high 13 digs and freshman libero Niki Receveur pitched in with 10.

In the first set, Moyer and McCoy helped the Lightning jump out to an 11-7 lead with two kills apiece as Bloomfield took a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Deacons went on a 7-0 run helped by three Dominic Spivey service aces, and they pulled in front 14-11. Back came Moyer and the Lightning, as the freshman's four kills highlighted a 7-2 surge to help the Lightning regain the lead for good, 18-16. Two consecutive kills by Moyer and senior Rebecca Stoffer put the set away for GBC, 25-22 as the Lightning took a 1-0 match lead.

Bloomfield never trailed in the second set as the Deacons broke a 9-9 deadlock with a 10-4 run to go up 19-13 and force a Lightning timeout. The Deacons extended their lead to as many as 10 (24-14) and went on to win the set, 25-17 and even the match at 1-1.

Riding the momentum of a convincing second set win, Bloomfield jumped out to a 9-1 lead to start the third set. The Lightning re-grouped and turned a 12-5 deficit into a 22-15 advantage with an electrifying 17-3 rally helped along by three Receveur service aces. The Lightning went on to win the set, 25-17 and go up 2-1 in the match.

An early 7-2 run gave the Lightning a 9-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Deacons scored 10 of the next 15 points to take a 15-14 advantage. An Emily Shustack solo block highlighted a 3-0 Lightning surge which gave GBC back the lead, 17-15 and forced a Bloomfield timeout. The two teams traded points until the Lightning closed out the set on a 4-0 run, highlighted by a Dempsey service ace and a Moyer kill. They won the set 25-20 and claimed a 3-1 match victory.

The Lightning are back in action on Tues. night at the Jones Center for a crucial match in the CACC South Division standings against fourth-place Georgian Court at 7 p.m. GBC will look to take down the Lions for the first time since a 3-1 victory on Oct. 15, 2005.
