PIKE CREEK, Del. - After digging itself a 2-0 hole, the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team fought all the way back to win 3-2 over University of the Sciences on Senior Night at the Joseph West Jones Center. The Lightning stayed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff hunt and completed the season sweep of their division rival Devils as they won by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-7.
With the win, GBC improved to 13-14 overall and 7-10 in league play. Meanwhile, fourth-place Chestnt Hill lost at Wilmington tonight, 3-1 to slip to 8-9 in the conference. The Lightning now sit just one match back of the Griffins, who own the tiebreaker over GBC having earned a season sweep. Also, Georgian Court lost to PhilaU tonight to fall to 6-11.
Seniors
Amanda Mills,
Roni Shaner and
Rebecca Stoffer were honored before the game, and Shaner and Stoffer turned in terrific performances for the Lightning. Stoffer led the team with 15 kills and hit .400 for the night while Shaner did a little of everything with six kills, nine assists, eight digs and two service aces.
The freshmen duo of
Taylor Moyer and
Kadi McCoy were also a tremendous offensive force, particularly as the Lightning made their charge late in the match. Both cashed in for 12 kills apiece, with Moyer hitting a remarkable .647 hitting percentage with 12 kills and just one error on 17 attempts. McCoy also led the team defensively with a match-high 18 digs.
Plagued by service errors in the first two sets, the Lightning stumbled to a 2-0 deficit despite hitting .259 in the first set and an impressive .333 in the second set.
The Lightning battled in set three as they turned a 13-9 deficit into a 16-15 advantage with a 7-2 rally. Leading 20-19, the Lightning closed out the set with a 5-1 run and forced a fourth set with a 25-20 set three win.
GBC would start off hot in set four, jumping out to a 4-1 lead thanks to kills by junior
Monica Dempsey (34 assists for the night) and Moyer. The Devils hung around and forced a 16-16 deadlock, but the Lightning then went on a 7-1 surge highlighted by two McCoy kills. GBC went on to force a fifth set with a 25-20 set four win.
Set five was a see-saw battle early on, but the Lightning broke away from a 5-5 tie with a 4-0 run and forced a Devils timeout, leading 9-5. With the score 10-7, the Lightning finished off the comeback with a 5-0 run which ended on a USciences attack error.
The Lightning host a tri-match on Sat., beginning with a 12 p.m. CACC match versus Dominican and a non-conference match against Mercy College at 4 p.m.
