PIKE CREEK, Del. - Farrell Pomponio's golden goal with 48 seconds left in the second overtime session lifted Georgian Court University over host Goldey-Beacom College, 3-2 and sent off the Lightning's 10 seniors with a bitter loss in their final game at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Tues. afternoon.

GBC (6-8, 4-7 CACC) squandered 1-0 and 2-1 leads before regulation and ultimately surrendered the game-winning goal by Pomponio, when had the Lightning held on for just 48 more seconds, the game would have ended in a tie. The loss mathematically eliminates the Lightning from earning the eighth and final seed in the CACC Tournament. Georgian Court improved to 10-7 overall and 7-5 in league play.

 Senior
Marissa Valladares scored just before the 20-minute mark to put the Lightning on the board with a 1-0 advantage. She collected a pass from freshman
Alexandra Smith on the left wing, turned and fired from the left corner of 18-yard box and snuck the ball into the lower right corner of the net. About 20 minutes later, Kelly Lyons responded for Georgian Court as she headed in a direct kick from Becky Witmer to force a 1-1 tie. The score would remain tied at the intermission.

After over 15 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, the Lightning struck again to go in front once again, 2-1. Senior
Ashley Longo found a loose ball on a corner kick from Valladares, and fired a shot from in close for her second goal of the season. But once more, the Lightning could only maintain that lead for 20 minutes as Nicole Petrosino scored off another assist from Witmer to even the score at two-apiece in the 81st minute.

Alex Smith, who ranks fifth in the nation in goals scored per-game, nearly tallied her 15th goal of the season on a breakaway in the waning minutes of regulation, but she rocketed a shot right at GCU's Shealyn Sullivan, who made one of her three saves on the day to keep the score tied at the end of regulation.

Both teams took two shots apiece in the first overtime session, but to no avail, as second overtime would decide the verdict. The Lightning would actually hold a 3-2 shot advantage in the second extra session, but Pomponio's goal in the 110th minute of play would ultimately doom the Lightning. Pomponio's shot from about 30 yards out did not have much on it, but Lightning goalkeeper
Kristin Degenhardt was screened on the play and could not find the ball until it was trickling into the net for the game-winning goal.

GBC goes on the road to play its final game of the season at Caldwell on Fri., Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
