CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior setter
Monica Dempsey recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 17 assists and a match-high 20 digs, but the visiting Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team was no match for the top team in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division, as the Lightning fell to Caldwell in straight sets, 25-11, 25-10 and 25-16.
The Lightning (12-13 overall) have fallen victim to each of the CACC's two division leaders in consecutive matches and their record has slid to 6-9 in the league. Chestnut Hill, with a 3-0 win last night over Post, moves ahead of the Lightning for the coveted fourth-place spot in the CACC South. Caldwell improved to 19-4 overall and 14-1 in league play with the win.
Freshman outside hitter
Kadi McCoy and senior middle hitter
Rebecca Stoffer combined for 15 kills to lead GBC offensively, but the Lightning hit just .071 as a team compared to a .304 hitting percentage by Caldwell. The Cougars were led by Amber Mosher's 14 kills (.481 hitting percentage) and Lauren Roth's 28 assists.
In set one, the Cougars raced to a 12-3 lead courtesy of an 8-0 run. They extended that lead to 19-5 after a 5-0 spurt and cruised to a 25-11 set one win.
Roth led Caldwell to a 6-0 start with two service aces before Stoffer put GBC on the board with a kill. But after the Stoffer kill, the Cougars ran off eight straight points to go up 14-1 and take complete control of the set. The Lightning pulled within 16-6 after a kill by McCoy, but that would be as close as they would get. Caldwell won the set on a Mosher kill, 25-10.
Again Caldwell had the upperhand to start set three as Roth led the Cougars on a 4-0 run. The Lighting rallied back to tie the match, 7-7 and would go on to force four more ties before eventually taking a 12-11 lead on a kill by Dempsey. The Cougars responded, however, with a 5-0 run to pull in front 16-12. Leading 19-15, Caldwell used a 4-0 run to go up 23-15, and ultimately closed out the set and the match with a kill by Roth, to win 25-16 and complete the 3-0 match sweep.
