PIKE CREEK, Del. - After scoring just two goals in its last four games, the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team broke through for eight goals in a lopsided shutout win over non-conference foe Lincoln University on Thurs. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.

The Lightning, who seek their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff appearance since 2006, evened their overall record at 6-6 with the win today. They have now tripled their win total from the previous season. Freshman Alexandra Smith scored one goal today to pull within a goal of tying the school single-season  record, 15. Junior Kelly Williams, who entered the week tied for the league lead with seven assists, had a foot in four of the Lightning goals today, scoring one and assisting three.

Nearly 10 minutes went by before senior Ashley Longo opened the floodgates with her first goal of the season off a corner kick by classmate Marissa Valladares. Just 16 seconds later, Valladares scored one herself off a cross by Williams. Valladares struck again at the 12:28 mark for her fourth goal of the season as she headed in a cross from Williams and put the Lightning ahead 3-0. Then just 24 seconds later, Williams fired a shot from inside the box for her own goal. The Lightning scored four goals in a span of just over three minutes.

Smith added the Lightning's fifth goal of the game when she scored off of a cross from Williams in the 16th minute to make it 5-0. By that point, head coach John Cappiello had all but cleared his bench, affording three players the chance to score their first goals of the season - two of them, the first of their careers.

First-year player Luciana Pereira, a former standout Lightning tennis player, scored on a breakaway, receiving a thru ball from sophomore Alexandra Ford and beating a defender for the first goal of her career. With that goal, the Lightning would coast to a 6-0 lead at halftime.

In the 62nd minute, junior transfer defender Shaana Headley got in the scoring act, as she took on the Lincoln defense from about 30 yards out and eventually fired a shot from in close to beat Lion goalkeeper Sima Sinforosa for GBC's seventh goal of the game. This marked the first goal of her Lightning career.

Senior Joniqua Washington scored the final goal of the game on a pretty give-and-go play with senior Ashley Steele. This was Washington's second career goal, with the first coming in last season's 8-0 win over Lincoln in the season finale.

Junior Alyssa Vetrano played the full 90 minutes in Lightning goal and made six saves to preserve the shutout victory.
