PIKE CREEK, Del. - Head coach Rich Bowers emptied his bench as the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team rolled past non-conference foe Lincoln, 3-0 on Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center. The Lightning improved to 12-11 overall as they won in straight sets, 25-8, 25-12 and 25-20.

Junior Catherine Howard led the charge as she collected a season-high 12 kills with zero attack errors in 17 swings for the Lightning. Senior Rebecca Stoffer tallied six kills and freshmen Kadi McCoy and Shannon Waters had five kills apiece. Junior Monica Dempsey had 16 assists and senior Roni Shaner pitched in with 11 as well. Shaner also contributed a match-high seven service aces for the night.

The Lightning struck right away with three consecutive kills (two by Dempsey) to take a 3-0 lead early in the first set. They extended that lead to 7-2 and then scored six straight points to go up 14-5. The hosts continued to pour it on, led by four McCoy kills and two Shaner service aces, and they cruised to a 25-8 victory in set one. GBC finished with 15 kills and zero attack errors on 22 attempts for an astounding .682 hitting percentage.

Lincoln hung around early in set two, keeping within 7-5 until an 8-0 Lightning surge lifted GBC to a 15-5 advantage which carried them to a 25-12 victory. Howard and Moyer combined for seven of the Lightning's 11 kills in the set as they hit .409 as a team to take a 2-0 match lead.

In set three, the Lions came roaring out to a 5-0 lead before GBC regrouped and forced an 8-8 tie with an 8-3 run. Lincoln led 14-13 before the Lightning used an 8-0 run to pull in front 21-14. From there, GBC went on t win 25-20. Howard had five kills and Waters registered four kills, including match point, as the Lightning claimed a 3-0 match victory.

On Thursday, GBC returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a trip to Philadelphia to take on Holy Family University at 7 p.m. The Tigers are first in the South Division with a 12-1 league record. The Lightning nearly pulled off an upset the last time these two met on Sept. 22, but they could not put HFU away with a 2-0 lead and ultimately lost, 3-2. GBC will try to avenge that loss and knock off the Tigers for the first time since 2006.
