Emily Shustack, the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team earned a pivotal Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over South Division nemesis, Georgian Court by a count of 3-0 on Tues. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning (10-10) earned their first victory over the Lions since Oct. 15, 2005 in impressive fashion as they put down the Lions (6-16) in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22. With the win, they are now tied with GCU for fourth place in the CACC South Division as both teams are 5-6 in league play.
Stoffer tied for the match-high with 11 kills to go with just two attack errors for a hitting percentage of .409. She also pitched in two solo blocks, one of which was for game point in the second set. The imposing 6-foot-3 Shustack was dominant once again in the middle as she totaled eight kills with zero attack errors in 13 attempts, hitting .615 for the match. She also had two assisted blocks. Monica Dempsey had a double-double with 19 assists and a team-high 11 digs.
In the first set, the two teams traded points early on until the Lightning broke an 8-8 deadlock with a 9-4 surge to go up 17-12 and force a GCU timeout. Stoffer had two kills during the run. Out of the timeout, the Lightning extended the lead to 21-14, and went on to win by their largest margin of the set, 25-17. Kadi McCoy and Shustack each added two kills as well.
The Lightning stormed out to an 8-1 lead in set two, and never looked back. They led by as many as 10 (14-4) and cruised to a 25-18 victory in set two to take a 2-0 match lead. Shaner had a kill and two service aces and Dempsey had three kills to lead the Lightning offensively.
The Lions came out fighting in the third set and grabbed an early 8-6 lead, but GBC used a 5-0 rally to pull in front 11-8. Leading 12-9, the Lightning allowed the Lions to score seven of the next 10 points and regain the lead, 16-15. Georgian Court led 18-16 when GBC scored four straight points, culminating in a Shustack kill to send the Lighting to a 20-18 advantage. The Lions fought back to tie the score at 22, but GBC ran off the next three consecutive points for the win.
Next up for GBC is a Thurs. night match at 7 p.m. against another South Division foe, Chestnut Hill College. The Lightning will try to avenge an earlier 3-0 loss to the Griffins earlier this season while the team hosts its "Dig Pink" event at the Joseph West Jones Center to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.
