PIKE CREEK, Del. - The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Dominican College, 2-1 on Sat. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning (4-3, 3-2 CACC) earned the program's first win over Dominican since a 2-1 victory on Sept. 9, 2006, and the first of fifth-year head coach John Cappiello's career. Dominican fell to 2-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
Senior
Felicia Justice's first goal of the season just minutes before halftime proved to be the game-winner as GBC clung to a 2-1 lead despite a feverish Charger attack late in the second half. Freshman Alex Smith, who entered this week leading the nation in goals per-game, tallied her 11th goal of the season. She has now scored in five consecutive games.
GBC held a 14-13 shot advantage, but Dominican took more corner kicks (5-1) on the afternoon. Lightning goalkeeper
Kristin Degenhardt played the full 90 minutes in goal and made three saves to preserve the win. Dominican's Kaitlyn Hertz made four saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of work.
Smith scored the game's first goal just before the three-minute mark as she tallied off a cross from senior midfielder
Marissa Valladares. In all four Lightning wins this year, Smith has scored the first goal of the game.
Olivia Antonopoulos answered for Dominican after 32 minutes of scoreless action to even the score at one apiece just before the 35th minute. Jennifer Becker's thru ball found Antonopoulos' feet, and Antonopoulous beat a Lightning defender to score the goal.
With the intermission approaching, the Lightning struck once more with a goal by Justice in the 42nd minute. The 5-foot-8 Justice showed off her great leaping ability as she headed in a cross by junior
Kelly Williams for the go-ahead goal. The assist was Williams' conference-best seventh of the year. Senior
Karin Eriksson was also credited with an assist on the play.
Dominican would fire eight shots to Goldey-Beacom's six in the second half, but Degenhardt stopped the only one that was on net.
Next up for the Lightning is a road game at Caldwell (4-3-1, 4-0-1 CACC) on Mon., Oct. 3 at 11 a.m.
