PIKE CREEK, Del. - Junior Monica Dempsey had a career-high 46 assists and senior Rebecca Stoffer had a career-high 17 kills, but it was not enough as the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team suffered a 3-2 defeat to Concordia College on Sat. afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.

The Lightning (7-9, 3-5 CACC) won the first set 25-23, then lost the second and third sets 25-12 and 31-29, re-grouped to win set four 25-21, but fell in the fifth and decisive set, 15-12. Concordia, winless in 13 matches coming into today, improved to 1-13 (1-7 CACC).

The first set was a battle to the finish as neither team led by more than two throughout the duration of the game. Freshman outside hitter Kadi McCoy's four kills led the Lightning to a 25-23 victory, with freshman Emily Shustack tallying the final kill to close out the set.

Concordia's Olivia Thompson took over in set two as all five of her attack attempts landed for kills. The Clippers hit .400 (16 kills, two errors) as a team and cruised to a 25-12 victory.

The Lightning stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the third set, but Concordia closed the gap to two, 10-8 with a 7-4 run. The Clippers would eventually tie the score at 18-all, and it was a see-saw battle from there-on-out. Nine ties and three lead changes would ensue before Concordia eventuall sealed the deal with a kill by Amanda Margedant to win, 31-29.

The match would come to a half for about 30 minutes while Concordia head coach Patrick Dietz received medical attention along the Clipper sideline. Dietz, suffering from dehydration and exhaustion, collapsed in between the third and fourth set. He would return to the Concordia bench during the fifth set.

Goldey-Beacom controlled the lead for most of set four and put the Clippers away with a 6-2 run to close out the game. Dempsey led the run with a kill and one of her six service aces, and the Lightning won the set, 25-21 after a Clipper attack error.

With the Jones Center crowd on its feet, the Lightning raced to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set only to see the Clippers go on a 7-2 run and take a 7-6 lead. With the score knotted at eight, GBC scored two straight points to go up 10-8, but Concordia answered by scoring the next five to go up 13-10. A kill by Stoffer and an ace by Dempsey brought the Lightning within a point, 13-12, but a Thompson kill and a Lightning attack error gave Concordia the 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match victory.

GBC is back in action on Tues., Oct. 4 as the Lightning host a rematch against the University of the District of Columbia at 7 p.m.
