WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team fell to 0-2 to start the 2010 season with a 2-0 loss to Mercy College in the West Chester Tournament on Sat. afternoon.
The Lightning, who lost 5-1 to the host West Chester yesterday, were outshot 21-10 for the afternoon by Mercy and could not overcome two first-half Maverick goals.
Mercy, a member of the East Coast Conference, improved to 2-1 with the win this afternoon. The Mavericks were coming off a stunning 3-0 upset of the preseason No. 15 nationally-ranked Wilmington Wildcats just yesterday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (0-2) played the full 90 minutes and made a career-high 12 saves while allowing two goals. Juniors Rob Cann and Kwame Appiah and sophomore Matt Bik led the Lightning with two shots apiece.
Mercy's Alex Cruz opened the scoring a little over three minutes into the action off an assist from Jason Schobert. Alex Redmond, who scored Mercy's first goal against Wilmington yesterday, added an insurance goal for the Mavericks just before the 24-minute mark to put his team ahead, 2-0.
GBC, which took only three shots in the first half, had opportunities to score right before intermission. The Lightning had two corner kicks in the final five minutes of the first half, but a header by junior defender David Krawczyk at the 43-minute mark and a shot by Thatcher Howell at 44:53 both went wide.
The Lightning applied more pressure in the second half with seven shots, but only three of their 10 shots for the whole game were on goal while the Mavericks put 14 shots on net. Mercy also led in corner kicks, 6-4.
Goldey-Beacom, still seeking its first win of the season, will host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Shippensburg University on Wed. afternoon at 4 p.m. The Lightning will try to defeat a PSAC school for the first time since Sept. 6, 2006.
