PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team scored three straight goals to pull in front 4-3, but Bloomfield's Christine Rutherford's goal in the 81st minute forced a 4-4 tie in a thrilling Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Watseeing Park.
Junior midfielder Marissa Valladares led the Lightning with back-to-back goals late in the second half and sophomore Kelly Williams recorded a goal and an assist.
Still, despite outshooting the Deacons 25-20, the Lightning (0-4-1, 0-2-1 CACC) had to settle for a tie because they allowed four goals, the last of which came with under 10 minutes to play.
The Deacons were able to get on the board first in the 24th minute when Jerrica Lavooy finished a pass form Christine Rutherford to put her team up 1-0.
Goldey-Beacom answered with a goal of its own in the 36th minute when junior Ashley Longo finished a cross from freshman Tess Beukers to knot the score at a goal apiece.
But Erika Len gave Bloomfield a 2-1 advanvtage heading into the half when she finished a breakaway off a pass from Lavooy to give the Deacons the lead heading into the break.
Len struck again the 62nd minute when she fired a shot to the corner of the net to give Bloomfield a 3-1 cushion with 28 minutes left in regulation. And that's when the Lightning came storming back with three consecutive goals in a span of eight minutes, including a pair of goals by Valladares, and stunned the Deacons by taking a 4-3 lead.
Bloomfield would answer, however, as Rutherford connected on a diving header that found the back of the net to tie the score at four with less than 10 minutes left to play. Both teams tried feverishly to notch the game-winner, but ten minutes of remaining time and 20 minutes of overtime action could not yield a goal on either side as the two CACC rivals settled for a 4-4 draw.
