PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team gave a spirited effort against its rival Wilmington University on Tues. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field but wound up on the losing end of a 3-0 verdict.
The Lightning (0-4) took a season-high 13 shots, but they could not contain a Wildcat attack that fired 24 shots on the day, 11 on net. With the loss, GBC falls to 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, while Wilmington (3-0 overall) improved to 2-0.
Junior Felicia Justice was most active for the Lightning with three shots, all on goal. Juniors Ashley Longo and Karin Eriksson and freshman Allie Ford each tallied three shots as well.
Wilmington's Brooke Eveler made 10 saves in the Wildcat net to preserve a complete-game shutout while GBC's sophomore keeper Alyssa Vetrano (0-3) made eight saves and allowed three goals.
Angelica Appold put the Wildcats on the board at the 20:12 mark with a goal off an assist from Amanda Davis. Eliza Burk would tally nearly 12 minutes later off an assist from Ashli Gerlach, and Klaudia Furman would punch in a third goal off an assist from Burk just minutes before the half.
The Lightning, which took seven shots in the first half, had a few good scoring opportunities early, but could not capitalize.
In the second half, the GBC defense tightened up while the offense continued to apply pressure. Still, the Lightning could not find the back of the net as they were shut out for the third time this season.
Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Sat. at 11 a.m. as the Lightning go on the road to take on CACC foe Bloomfield College.
