PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team fell 3-0 on Sat. afternoon in its annual Alumni Game at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning, recently picked to finish ninth of 12 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schools in a pre-season coaches' poll, had several scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net in this pre-season exhibition match.
Junior Kwame Appiah had three quality chances to score in the second half. First, he captured a loose ball inside the box and fired a shot that hit off of the right post in the 55th minute. Then, twice he headed beautiful crosses sent right in front of the net by senior Erlin Rodezno, but the Alumni goalkeeper Brian Rudden was up to the challenge.
The Alumni's Kirk Leach opened the scoring near the 37th minute when he dribbled around a Lightning defender and beat sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias to the right side of the net.
Josh Petro added a goal for the Alums with about 1:30 left in the opening half to put his team up 2-0 at the half.
Matt DiGiacobbe (2002-04), the school's third all-time leading career goal scorer (22 goals) and the all-time leader in assists (29) put home the final goal of the afternoon in the 86th minute.
GBC will host another scrimmage on Thurs., Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. against Delaware Tech.
