PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team erupted for a combined 33 runs on 37 hits in two games as they blasted Lincoln by scores of 16-3 and 17-0 in a non-league doubleheader Thurs. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
The Lightning, who improved to 6-0 against Lincoln in the all-time series, are now 14-10 on the season overall. Lincoln, of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, fell to 7-15.
Game 1: GBC 16, Lincoln 3 (5)
The Lions got off to a quick start, plating one run in both the top of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second frame. But the Lightning would take the game over from there, scoring four runs in the second, five in the third and seven in the fourth as junior pitcher Heather Draper settled into the game and allowed just one more Lion run to score the rest of the way.
Freshman third baseman Angelina Myers had a team-high three hits (including a double) to go with three runs scored and one batted in. Senior Kim Narkiewicz also scored three runs and drove in one run as she hit a double and a triple for GBC. Five of the Lightning's 15 hits went for extra-bases as GBC handled everything in Lincoln pitcher Taylor Hines' (4-10) arsenal.
Draper (5-2) picked up the win as she tossed 3.2 innings and allowed four hits, three runs (two earned), walked three and struck out five. Sophomore Sadie Jones came on and collected her fourth save of the season. She faced five batters, walked one and struck out two while earning GBC the win.
Game 2: GBC 17, Lincoln 0 (5)
Sophomore designated hitter Danielle Rice clubbed her sixth and seventh homeruns of the year to lift the Lightning to a lopsided 17-0 win in the second game. Freshman Ashley Antosh was sensational in the circle for GBC, tossing five shutout innings and allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 10.
The Lightning put seven runs up on the board in both the first and second inning and then coasted the rest of the way to victory. Sophomore first baseman Shannon O'Hara and junior second baseman Jackie Waddle both went 4-for-4 at the plate, with O'Hara scoring three runs and driving in two while Waddle scored two and drove in four. Freshman catcher Erin Poffenberger also had a three-RBI double in the third inning.
GBC had a school-record 22 hits, seven of which were for extra-bases.
The Lightning will look to take the momentum from today's games into tomorrow as they enter back into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a visit to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at 3 p.m.
