PIKE CREEK, Del. – After holding Wilmington to 13 first-half points on 17-percent shooting, the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team cruised to a 65-46 victory against its crosstown rival in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Joseph West Jones Center Tues. night.
The 13 first-half points was the fewest points allowed in a half of basketball by Goldey-Beacom since Feb. 21, 2004 when the Lightning allowed Nyack just 12 points in the first half on the way to a 70-34 victory.
Led by the trio of redshirt-sophomore guard Ashley Rosario (12 points), redshirt-junior guard Jacinda Jones (11 points) and sophomore forward Irene Hudson (10 points), the Lightning won their third straight game and improved to 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in CACC play. GBC has now won the last three meetings between these two schools.
Wilmington (1-7, 1-2 CACC) was led by Courtney Coleman's 15 points off the bench and Brittney Robinson's nine points and eight rebounds.
Similar to the opening of the Lightning's win at Philadelphia U. last Wed., Jones came out on fire to help GBC grab an early lead. She connected on both of her first two three-point attempts in the first two minutes of play to put the Lightning in front 6-0.
After allowing the Wildcats to cut the deficit to two (8-6), the Lightning went on a 23-3 surge that began with four consecutive made free-throws by Hudson.
During that stretch, the Lightning held their crosstown rival scoreless for stretches of 4:25 and 5:58 as they took a commanding,

31-9 lead.
Freshman guard Taylor Leonard capped off a 5-0 run to end the half with a three-point basket for the first points of her career at GBC as the Lightning took a 36-13 lead into intermission.
GBC held Wilmington to 5-of-29 (17.2 percent) shooting in the first stanza, including 1-of-8 from three-point range. The Wildcats earned just two trips to the line and made 2-of-4 from the stripe.
Meanwhile, the Lightning shot 13-of-33 (39.4 percent) from the field and 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) from long-distance. They also made 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) from the foul line.
The second half was much more evenly played, but GBC had already done the damage in the first half. Head coach Jen Carleton saw great contributions from her reserve players as she cleared her bench for the first time this season. The Lightning bench outscored Wilmington's 32-17 for the night.
Freshman Briana Richmond-Peters came off the bench to score two points and grab five rebounds, junior guard Lindsay Duck dished out a career-high six assists and pitched in seven points, senior guard Amber Gullickson and freshman guard Melanie Johnson registered five points apiece and senior center Megan Knowles pulled down a season-high three rebounds.
Sophomore forward Devonne Richardson, the star of last year's double-overtime Lightning win in the last meeting between these two in-state rivals, was outstanding on this night as well. The CACC's fourth-leading rebounder was right at her average with 11 rebounds and also recorded eight points, three assists and a career-high seven steals.
Defensively, the catalysts for the night were Richardson, Duck (two steals), and senior forward Arielle Alford (three steals, one block). Carleton's squad executed defensive traps in the corners to perfection and befuddled the Wildcat backcourt all night long. The Lightning forced 23 Wilmington turnovers and the Wildcats managed just four assists as a team for the game.
