NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by its cross-town rival Wilmington University on Wed. afternoon at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex.

The game, originally scheduled for Tues., Oct. 5 at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field, was pushed back a day and moved to Kirkwood (Wilmington's site) as a result of all the rain in the area this past week. Although the game was at Wilmington's home site, Goldey-Beacom was still deemed the home team.

With the loss, the Lightning's two-game win streak came to an end and they fell to 2-8 on the season overall and 1-5 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Wildcats, beginning to show why they were ranked 15th in an NSCAA pre-season poll, improved to 4-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.

GBC started a little shaky, allowing a Nickalus McDonald goal on a thru pass by Jamal Wiggins and a strike from just outside the 18 nearly 16 minutes into the game, but hung right with the Wildcats for nearly the rest of the first half.

About to go into the half down just 1-0, the Lightning turned the ball over near midfield and Wilmington's Jorge Zapata capitalized off an assist by Joe Stant with just 14 seconds left before intermission to put the 'Cats up 2-0.

The Lightning, which could do little offensively all day (two shots), were successful at getting the ball into the attacking third, but could not seem to register shots. Junior co-captain Dave Krawczyk and freshman Dylan Pepper each took one shot for GBC for the day.

Zepata added his second goal of the day and the team's third in the 72nd minute when he sent a shot past Lightning goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (four saves, three goals allowed) off a pass from McDonald.

Aside from the few breakdowns that resulted in Wildcat goals, the GBC defense did a solid job of containing Wilmington for most of the day. The Lightning defense, led by Krawczyk, junior co-captain Carlos Bastardo, seniors Mike Sager and Chris Casey, and sophomores Mariano Olcese and Andrew Scoma held WU to just 10 shots on the day.

Notes: Freshman midfielder Andre Jank, who sustained a broken collar bone near the end of the Caldwell game on Sept. 25, is out for the season. The Lightning have also been without sophomore forward Kwame Appiah (1g, 1a, 14 sh) for the last three games, including today's as a result of an ankle injury he suffered against Philadelphia U. on Sept. 21. Also, sophomore forward Ricky Jackson, the hero in both the Lightning's two consecutive victories on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27, played for just 15 minutes today because of a cut to his right cornea. Head coach Dr. Michael Finizio had just three field players to substitute this afternoon because of all the team's injured players.
